On Wednesday May 27,2026 Athens had the luck to host Jarboe, an ex member of the Swans. Jarboe Devereaux, known mononymously as Jarboe, is an American singer and musician who came to prominence as a member of the New York City experimental rock band Swans in 1985. Jarboe and Michael Gira, the founder of Swans, were the two constant members of the group until it broke up in 1997.
Featuring Joy Von Spain -Joy Von Spain is an American avant-garde composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist based in Seattle and the Netherlands. Known for her work spanning darkwave, neoclassical, and industrial music, she is a member of Eye of Nix and To End It All- , the avant garde idol presented to the people of the Temple Athens her new EP, "Perseverance as Prayer".
Within the 40 minute set, the venue was filled with sounds of birds, nature, screams and sorrow. The antithesis between the melancholia and the peaceful sounds of nature, the forest, the trees, the birds, the wind was some kind of art only an icon like Jarboe could perform with such an emotion. Sitting on her chair, singing her magical vocals and having Joy Von Spain playing the keyboards and performing the backing vocals, offered us a night out of the ordinary, turning the venue of Temple which is located in the center of the concrete city of Athens,into a forest of sorrows. To me it was very interesting having people talking to me about her, people who have been following her journey for a very long time, her fans, describing her as something extraordinary, thanking the newcomers like me for having the curiosity to come and discover her artistic views. It felt like she has built a wonderful community around her. Also, I was very pleased to see very young people in the audience. People very young, who could already understand this kind of art. The set was about 40 minutes, kind of short, but as she said it was her new EP and it was beautiful and it was enough for us that we experienced her world, even for this little while and we can't wait to have her back to our city soon. Jarboe got up looked at us pleased and walked inside, leaving us in her own way of saying goodbye.
