It's June 27, it's summer, it's Athens, it's Greece and it's Hardcore!
And I am lucky enough to photograph the band that gave Greece one of the first hardcore concerts in the country, along with the two-day Agnostic Front at An Club almost twenty-five years ago. We are talking about the legendary Cro-Mags.
Introducing Cro-Mags to the new audiences, it is an American hardcore punk band from New York. The band, which has a strong cult following, has released six studio albums, with the first two considered the most influential. Additionally, they were one of the first bands to combine hardcore punk with thrash metal.
We are lucky enough to have the hardcore titans being able to tour again after their "spicy" tea spilling-resolving some issues era.
What happened to Cro Mags?
New York City, U.S. In April 2019, founding member Harley Flanagan reached a settlement with former singer John Joseph and former drummer Mackie Jayson in which Flanagan would retain exclusive rights to the Cro-Mags name while Joseph and Jayson would move forward under the name, Cro-Mags "JM". Back to Arch Club Athens, June 2024. The show is getting started with the hardcore band from Tbilisi, Georgia, xResistenciAx. It's been a year since they supported Agnostic Front in Greece and now they were back full of energy on stage and with a movie exit from stage. Starting their set ten minutes before the announced start time, I guess those guys are full surprises. The fans started gathering and the club started filling up and some beatdowns later, by the end of their set the singer asked us if we could help him with this, because it's the first time he's doing it. We were all left wondering for a few seconds and my dude pulls out a ring and proposes to his girl. By the way it's the second marriage proposal Ι am witnessing this summer (the other one was at the Rammstein Concert), it seems like Nayia's gonna get you all married this year. Next!

Next support act was Black Mamba that was formed in Athens by 5 friends to express their Respect, Equality, freedom and anti-racism views in 2017.The band played for about 30 minutes and warmed up the crowd well with a hard sound and characteristic clear vocals. Black Mamba's setlist was mainly composed of songs from their first album "Spit It Out".

A few songs later and just right on time Harley Flanagan enters the stage wearing Spartan headdress. The band opens with the classic "We Gotta Know" and a few songs later Flanagan pauses to inform us that in Athens he has seen the most beautiful prostitutes. A good man with a good sense of humor is also appreciated. Kept going with the audience having crazy energy, more sweat, more footwork more energy. Flanagan pauses again to talk to us one more time. He said city of Athens reminds him of home, New York and that they totally will not take them 24 more years to be back to Greece. It's gonna be sooner this time! Good,awesome. The night was very warm, full of headbanging and moshing, at some point the frontman asked politely to open the doors for fresh air as the club was boiling from the heat and the smoke of the cigarettes and he could not sing. Closing the show with the "Hard Times" Flanagan asked us if he did his job well...Well, the man is 57 and he's doing excellent, he has the energy of a 30 year old. Of course everyone answered in the affirmative. Cro-Mags made us feel the old good Hardcore in our bones and we cannot wait for the next time.

Είναι 27 Ιουνίου, είναι καλοκαίρι, είναι Αθήνα, Ελλάδα και είναι Hardcore!
Και έχω την τύχη να φωτογραφίσω το συγκρότημα που έδωσε στην Ελλάδα μια από τις πρώτες Hardcore συναυλίες στη χώρα, μαζί με το διήμερο των Agnostic Front στο An Club πριν από σχεδόν είκοσι πέντε χρόνια. Μιλάμε για τους θρυλικούς Cro-Mags.
Παρουσιάζοντας τους Cro-Mags στο νέο κοινό, είναι ένα αμερικανικό hardcore πανκ συγκρότημα από τη Νέα Υόρκη. Το συγκρότημα, το οποίο έχει φανατικό κοινό, έχει κυκλοφορήσει έξι στούντιο άλμπουμ, με τα δύο πρώτα να θεωρούνται τα πιο επιδραστικά. Επιπλέον, ήταν ένα από τα πρώτα συγκροτήματα που συνδύασαν το hardcore punk με το thrash metal.
Είμαστε αρκετά τυχεροί που οι τιτάνες του hardcore μπορούν ξανά να περιοδεύουν μετά την «πικάντικη» spill-the-tea era τους και την επίλυση ορισμένων προβλημάτων.
Τι έγινε με τους Cro-Mags;
Νέα Υόρκη, ΗΠΑ Τον Απρίλιο του 2019, το ιδρυτικό μέλος τους Harley Flanagan κατέληξε σε συμφωνία με τον πρώην τραγουδιστή John Joseph και τον πρώην ντράμερ Mackie Jayson, σύμφωνα με τον οποίο ο Flanagan θα διατηρούσε αποκλειστικά δικαιώματα στο όνομα Cro-Mags ενώ ο Joseph και ο Jayson θα προχωρήσουν με το όνομα. Επιστροφή στο Arch Club στην Αθήνα, Ιούνιος 2024. Το σόου ξεκινά με το Hardcore συγκρότημα από την Τιφλίδα της Γεωργίας, τους xResistenciAx. Έχει περάσει ένας χρόνος από τότε που έπαιξαν ως support για τους Agnostic Front στην Ελλάδα και τώρα επέστρεψαν γεμάτοι ενέργεια στη σκηνή και με μια κινηματογραφική έξοδο από τη σκηνή. Ξεκινώντας το σετ τους δέκα λεπτά πριν από την ανακοινωθείσα ώρα έναρξης, τι να πω, υποθέτω ότι αυτοί οι τύποι είναι όλο εκπλήξεις. Οι θαυμαστές άρχισαν να μαζεύονται και το κλαμπ άρχισε να γεμίζει και μερικά beatdown αργότερα, στο τέλος του σετ τους ο τραγουδιστής μας ρώτησε αν μπορούσαμε να τον βοηθήσουμε σε αυτό, γιατί είναι η πρώτη φορά που το κάνει. Μείναμε όλοι να αναρωτιόμαστε για λίγα δευτερόλεπτα και ο φοβερός αυτός τύπος βγάζει ένα δαχτυλίδι και κάνει πρόταση γάμου στο κορίτσι του. Παρεμπιπτόντως, είναι η δεύτερη πρόταση γάμου που πετυχαίνω αυτό το καλοκαίρι (η άλλη ήταν στη συναυλία Rammstein), φαίνεται η Nayia θα σας παντρέψει όλους φέτος. Επόμενος!
Επόμενο support act ήταν οι Black Mamba που δημιουργήθηκαν στην Αθήνα από 5 φίλους για να εκφράσουν τις απόψεις τους για το σεβασμό, την ισότητα, την ελευθερία και τον αντιρατσισμό το 2017. Το συγκρότημα έπαιξε για περίπου 30 λεπτά και ζέστανε καλά το κοινό με σκληρό ήχο και τα χαρακτηριστικά καθαρά φωνητικά. Το setlist των Black Mamba αποτελούνταν κυρίως από τραγούδια από το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ "Spit It Out".
Λίγα τραγούδια αργότερα και ακριβώς στην ώρα του ο Harley Flanagan μπαίνει στη σκηνή φορώντας σπαρτιατική περικεφαλαία. Η μπάντα ανοίγει με το κλασικό "We Gotta Know" και μερικά τραγούδια αργότερα ο Flanagan σταματά για να μας ενημερώσει ότι στην Αθήνα έχει δει τις πιο όμορφες ιερόδουλες. Έναν καλό άνδρα με καλή αίσθηση του χιούμορ τον έχουμε πάντα σε εκτίμηση. Συνέχισε με το κοινό να έχει τρελή ενέργεια, περισσότερος ιδρώτας, περισσότερη κίνηση, more footwork more energy. Ο Flanagan σταματάει ξανά για να μας μιλήσει άλλη μια φορά. Είπε ότι η πόλη της Αθήνας του θυμίζει το σπίτι, τη Νέα Υόρκη και ότι δεν θα τους πάρει άλλα 24 χρόνια για να επιστρέψουν στην Ελλάδα. Θα είναι πιο σύντομα αυτή τη φορά! Καλό, όλα τέλεια. Η νύχτα ήταν πολύ ζεστή, γεμάτη headbanging και moshing, κάποια στιγμή ο frontman ζήτησε ευγενικά να ανοίξει τις πόρτες για καθαρό αέρα καθώς το κλαμπ έβραζε από τη ζέστη και τον καπνό των τσιγάρων και δεν μπορούσε να τραγουδήσει.
Κλείνοντας με το «Hard Times» ο Flanagan μας ρώτησε αν έκανε καλά τη δουλειά του... Λοιπόν, ο άνθρωπος είναι 57 και τα πάει εξαιρετικά, έχει την ενέργεια ενός 30χρονου. Φυσικά όλοι απάντησαν καταφατικά. Οι Cro-Mags μας έκαναν να νιώσουμε τον παλιό καλό Hardcore στα κόκαλά μας και δεν μπορούμε να περιμένουμε μέχρι την επόμενη φορά.
